The Ballet
Ballet, I should say, is not a human troupe. Each “Actor” is a carefully made sculptural character with a double. I make these bodies in identical twos. The human performers who occupy these characters bring to life a hand made actor. The Gourd Officers, the Fauns, the white Chimps, the Red Peters can be “cast” in many roles. The materials I use to construct a character is the dominant text for a piece. I ask the people I work with to respond to the way the costume looks and feels on them to motivate actions. Some of my characters are uninhabitable puppets. These are picked up, manipulated, or left alone in a spot. Central to my work is the idea of the Spectral Audience which I define as “those who watch from posterity”.
